Breakfast At Tiffany’s Becomes A Reality

Fifty-six years after the movie’s cinema release, shoppers on New York’s famous Fifth Avenue can order breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Tiffany & Co., the luxury jeweler popularised by the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, opened its café this month as part of its Manhattan flagship store’s renovation.

Holly Golightly, the film’s protagonist, gazed longingly into the store’s windows as she bit into a pastry. Unlike the character, shoppers can now dine within the store.

The Blue Box Café

Named after their famous Tiffany gift boxes, the Blue Box Café specializes in American cuisine and is located on the fourth floor, overlooking the picturesque Central Park. The café is decorated in the company’s robin egg blue, its signature shade, and features new home accessories from Tiffany’s own range.

Wall decorations include chrome figurines and diamonds for an authentic Tiffany & Co. experience.

Those lucky enough to have dined here claim it is an unforgettable experience, adding to New York’s magical appeal and becoming an essential landmark for tourists visiting the city.

Breakfast and lunch cost $29 and $39 respectively and consist of two courses. The extremely popular café was fully booked on its opening day. The Blue Box Café is an ideal pitstop after browsing the store for high-end jewellery and homewares.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

The film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, is based on the novella of the same name by Truman Capote, published in 1958. The story, which is written from the point of view of a narrator, tells the story of a girl from the country who relocates to New York and frolics in high society.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s was nominated for three Oscars, including Audrey Hepburn for the lead role, and it won an award for best music score.

In 2012, the film was also added to the National Film Registry in the Library of Congress in the US. This registry is comprised of movies that represent historic and important artistic and cultural achievements in filmmaking.

This helped cement its position as one of the best-loved movies of all time. Fans of the film have traveled far and wide to arrive in New York and have breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Why Are Women Under-Represented In Web Development?

A leading North West creative director and university lecturer, Andy Golpys, has called on digital businesses to assist more women into high-growth tech careers.

In 2016, figures showed that 50,000 girls were turning their backs on STEM subjects every year. A comprehensive study carried out by PwC revealed that just 3pc of females had marked tech careers as their initial choice. Only 5pc of women currently hold leadership positions in tech industries.

Mr Golpys, who is the co-founder of MadeByShape, a web design studio in the North West, said that he wanted to bring his experience to bear, along with insights from primary players in the Northern digital sector, to challenge the industry to bring in more female developers.

Issues begin at study stage

He said that his experience as a digital university lecturer had revealed that, when graphic design students came to choose a focus discipline – such as photography and illustration, or animation and web design, around 50pc chose web design. Of these, however, only a small minority were female.

He asked his colleagues in the digital sector, to identify what was holding back this challenge to diversity, asking whether greater communication into the size and growth potential of the digital industry needed to be delivered to students and whether salaries and benefits needed to be reviewed to see why they weren’t appealing to women.

He explained that females were pursuing graphic design qualifications in large numbers, which meant that there must be a blocker that prevented similar numbers from selecting web design as their focus, rather than print design which is becoming less highly demanded.

Positive changes ahead?

Golpys did say that he had noticed early signs of positive changes in the last two years, with sector figureheads rolling out communication and engagement activity to help encourage more women into digital roles. He said that at MadeByShape, students and graduates of both sexes were invited to work with the designers on live briefs, to develop their skills and abilities on the job.

Graduates looking to work at a professional web development company in London, are able to apply for MadeByShape internships that boost their employability.

With the digital skills gap growing and with women still heavily underrepresented in the tech industry, there is a challenge ahead for digital businesses, policymakers and educators alike.

Uber Drivers Must Apply For New Background Checks

Uber has been operating in the UK for five years now, but the company’s growing attachment to controversy is only deepening. However, things are changing at Uber following revelations coming to light in August 2017. The police held the US business accountable for not reporting crimes against passengers. They also expressed concern that Uber was allowing circumstances to evolve that would put the general public at risk of harm. This claim was supported by figures that showed a 50% surge in registered sexual assaults involving Uber drivers in London within a year. Recently, it was also made known that a former Uber driver had been arrested in relation to the terror incident that happened at Buckingham Palace earlier this year.

Regulations woes and changes

Uber uses an app for bookings permitting customers to book a taxi from any location. Consequently, local councils are paralyzed from imposing regulations on the company. Furthermore, it was revealed that drivers who were denied, or who had their license negated by an authority, could go on to receive one from another authority.

Despite the fact that Uber drivers use the same roads as black cab drivers, they abide by different rules and laws. However, due to several red flags that have been raised, this is set to change.

Uber drivers have been informed by transport chiefs that they must undergtransportationo new criminal record checks after regulators deemed the current vetting process inadequate. A total of 13,000 minicab drivers were contacted to let them know their current background checks were not valid. Uber was told to message all of its drivers to apply for a new CRB check, via central government, within 28 days or be removed from the register.

The process of applying is simple, and anyone can apply for a DBS check. There are many companies who will conduct the check for you, such as Care Check.

CRB checks

It’s compulsory that all potential taxi drivers in London complete a CRB check, in order for employers to verify whether they are a suitable employee or not.

Transport for London (TfL) announced they would no longer be accepting DBS forms from third-party providers, including Onfido. Instead, all DBS checks would be conducted by its sole provider GBG.
